4 DAYS IN CHIAPAS - WHAT TO DO

Le Chiapas, un Etat bouleversant, de par la beauté de ses paysages et par l'ambiance qui y règne. C'est l'endroit le plus pauvre du Mexique mais seulement d'un point de vue économique. Il y a une telle richesse culturelle dans cet Etat paysan, qu'il est difficile de décrire toutes les émotions que l'on ressent une fois sur place. Un mélange d'émerveillement, de gène face à cette pauvreté et pourtant ;  la musique, la fête, les couleurs sont omniprésentes, notamment à San Cristobal le point de chute parfait pour un séjour dans cette région.

Après une nuit dans le bus depuis Oaxaca, nous sommes arrivés au petit matin sur les lieux, juste le temps de poser nos affaires, direction le centre, et le marché artisanal. Après une balade autour des rues principales de la ville nous avons pris un taxi direction San Juan Chamula un pueblo à quelques kilomètres de là. Il est déconseillé d'y prendre des photos, mais vous y trouverez un autre marché typique. On s'y rend surtout pour visiter son église, l'un des endroits les plus mystique qui m'ai été donné de voir. Un site poignant, où l'on ressent un certain malaise malgré la beauté des lieux. Il y a une atmosphère très particulière dans tous ce village, surement du à la pauvreté ; mais une belle expérience, un dépaysement total !

Retour vers San Cristobal en "camion" à se balader dans les rues colorées et très animées, une ambiance chaleureuse et des gens venus de tout horizon, beaucoup donnent l'impression d'avoir une histoire forte à raconter. Les deux jours suivant, ont été un enchainement de paysages plus différents les un des autres mais toujours aussi éblouissants. Que le Mexique est grand et beau ! Pour finir ses 4 jours - direction Palenque au petit matin, pour une visite du plus beau site Maya du pays. Une lumière renversante, dans un décors exceptionnel. Notre seul regret aura été, par manque de temps de ne pouvoir visiter, Agua el Azul et Misol-Ha, à bon entendeur, je reviendrai...

Chiapas, a shocking state, because of the beauty of its landscapes and the atmosphere that prevails there. It is the poorest of Mexico but only from an economic point of view. There is so much culture in this farmer state, that it is difficult to describe all the emotions that you feel once on site. A mixture of wonder, face poverty, but still ; music, celebration, colors are everywhere, especially in San Cristobal the perfect base for a stay in this region.

After a night in the bus from Oaxaca, we arrived in the morning, just the time to let our stuff at the hostel, then we went to the center, and the craft market. After a walk around the main streets of the city we took a cab to San Juan Chamula a pueblo few miles away, it is not recommended to take pictures there, but you will find another craft market, and more you have to go to visit the church, one of the most mystical places which was given me to see. I felt a deep discomfort despite the beauty. There is a very special atmosphere in this village, quite disturbing, but it was a great experience, what a change of scenery!

Back to San Cristobal in the "camion" for another walk through the colorful and bustling streets, a warm atmosphere and people from every horizon, many give the impression to have a strong story to tell. The next two days were a sequence of so many different landscapes from one another but still as stunning. Mexico is so big and beautiful! To finish his four days - towards Palenque in the morning, to visit the most beautiful Mayan site in the country. A stunning light in a unique decor. Our only regret has been, for lack of time not to visit, Agua el Azul and Misol-Ha, a wise, I'll be back ...

PALENQUE

"Exemple éminent de sanctuaire maya de l’époque classique, Palenque, qui connut son apogée entre le VIe et le VIIIe siècle, étendit son influence dans tout le bassin de l’Usumacinta. La technique et l’élégance de ses constructions, comme la légèreté de ses reliefs sculptés illustrant des thèmes mythologiques, témoignent du génie créateur de la civilisation maya." Situé dans la jungle du Chiapas, c'est une étape incontournable de la région. On y va pour l'histoire et la beauté des lieux, mais aussi pour écouter et avec un peu de chance apercevoir le célèbre singe hurleur... Un conseil allez-y à l'ouverture des lieux la lumière y est exceptionnelle, et vous aurez l'impression d'être quasiment seul sur les lieux !

Located in the jungle of Chiapas, this is an essential step in the region. We go there for the history and beauty of the place, but also to listen and hopefully see the famous howler monkey... An advice, go on the site for the opening time the light is amazing, and you will have the impression of being almost alone on the premises!

LAGOS DE MONTEBELLO

Lagos de Montebello, deuxième étape de la journée après les cascades El Chiflón, un climat tempéré et une multitude de lacs autour de la forêt longeant la frontière du Guatemala. Des panoramas envoûtants et apaisants, quelle meilleure invitation à la baignade qu'un radeau pour parcourir les lacs ! Les tours offrent trop peu de temps sur place, prévoyez plutôt une journée entière pour visiter les différent lacs et profitez des activités sur place.

Lagos de Montebello, the second stop of the day after El Chiflón waterfalls, a temperate climate and a multitude of lakes around the forest along the border of Guatemala. Captivating and relaxing views, what better invitation to swim than a raft to navigate the lakes! The bus tour offers too little time on site plan rather a whole day to visit the different lakes and enjoy the onsite activities.

EL CHIFLÓN

Pour notre dernier jour à San Cristobal nous avons opté pour un tour afin de visiter les cascades El Chiflón et les Lagos de Montebello. Comptez environs 2h30 de route pour arriver à cette première destination, un de nos coup de coeur de ce voyage dans le Chiapas. Ce lieux d'eco tourisme vous offrira durant la saison sèche (février à juillet), une magnifique perspective des cascades et la possibilité de vous baigner ! Commencez par monter les marches qui vous mèneront au sommet afin d'observer les chutes principales ; mais pensez à ranger vos appareils non étanche avant la dernière ascension, car vous finirez bien arrosés... Profitez sur le chemin retour d'une baignade dans les eaux un peu fraîches du fleuve, le dépaysement est total ! Pour ceux qui auront plus de temps n'hésitez pas à faire de la Tyrolienne entre les cascades, la première au sommet vous offrira une vue imparable.

For our last day in San Cristobal we went for a tour to visit the waterfalls El Chiflón and Lagos de Montebello. Count around 2h30 drive to get to the first destination, one of our favorite of the trip in Chiapas. This eco tourism sites will offer during the dry season (February to July), a magnificent view of the waterfalls and the opportunity to swim! Start by climbing the stairs that take you to the top of the main falls; but remember to store your unsealed devices before the final climb, as you will end well watered ... On the way back go for a swim in the fresh water of the river and for those who have more time do not hesitate to make the yodel between the waterfalls, the first at the summit will offer you an amazing view.

CANON DEL SUMIDERO Y CHIAPA DE CORZO

Après un petit déjeuner à San Cristobal de las Casas, prenez un bus en direction du Canon del Sumidero. Des tours proposent une journée entre Tuxla, Canon del Sumidero et Chiapa de Corzo, mais vous pouvez aussi prendre un bus voir un taxi, et vous y rendre par vos propres moyens afin profiter de chaque lieux sans contrainte de temps. Il n'y a pas de liaison direct entre Chiapa del Corzo et San Cristobal de las Casas, le bus ou "camion" vous déposera à Tuxla où il vous faudra ensuite en prendre un autre. L'option du taxi étant toujours valable entre les deux. Mais passons la logistique et revenons-en au sujet principal, le Canon del Sumidero - creusé par le fleuve Río Grijalva, vous naviguerez entre des falaises s'élevant jusqu'à 800m au dessus du niveau de l'eau. Vous pourrez aussi observer différents animaux le long du fleuve comme des hérons, vautours ou encore des crocodiles. Alors prenez une vedette et embarquez pour 2 heures de découverte ! Une fois l'excursion finie baladez-vous autour de Chiapa de Corzo une petite bourgade de style colonial, ou vous pourrez dégustez un bon poisson dans l'un des restaurants longeant le fleuve.

After a breakfast in San Cristobal de las Casas, take a bus to Canon del Sumidero. Tours offer a day between Tuxla, Canon del Sumidero and Chiapa de Corzo, but you can also take a bus or even a taxi and get there by your own means to enjoy every scene without time constraints. There is no direct connection between Chiapa del Corzo and San Cristobal de las Casas, bus or "camion" will drop you at Tuxla from where you will take another. Cab is still a valid option between both. But let's forget about logistics and return to the main topic, el Canon del Sumidero - dug by the Río Grijalva , you will sail between cliffs rising up to 800m above the water level. You will also observe different animals along the river as herons, vultures or crocodiles. So grab a boat and embark for 2 hours discovery! After finishing the tour walk around Chiapa de Corzo a small town with colonial style from where you can enjoy a good fish in one of the restaurants along the river .
